When presenting its bid for the 2002 Commonwealth Games back in 1995, the city promised to deliver a world class event, an outstanding spectacle and "to leave a lasting legacy of new sporting facilities and social, physical and economic regeneration"
That promise was delivered and in the period since the Games, Manchester has strengthened its sporting infrastructure and has created the largest sports development programme in the UK. Manchester Leisure Sports Development works with a wide range of agencies to improve access to sporting opportunity across the city and is closely aligned to delivery against local, regional and national targets in respect of crime reduction, the economy, health, education, cultural and environmental benefits.
All sports development programmes are designed to maximise participation in sport from all sections of the community and each major event staged in the city contributes to the continued growth of the programme and therefore the increase in sporting opportunities for Manchester residents.
