If you are on a budget try the YHA, a three star property situated by the canal in Castlefield and within a 10 minute walk of the city centre. Well placed for trips to either Manchester United or Lancashire County Cricket Club.
Although not quite as well placed as the Old Trafford Lodge, a modern hotel located next to Old Trafford cricket ground. The 36 Executive rooms all possess a balcony overlooking the wicket. Which is obviously best taken advantage of when Lancs (as they known) are playing at home or England are in town for a test match.
The Britannia is a much larger proposition and more traditional hotel but right in the heart of the city centre on Portland Street, very reasonable and a £6 cab ride to the City of Manchester Stadium or a 15 minute walk to the MEN Arena.
As well as being the home of Manchester City, the City of Manchester Stadium (also known as 'Eastlands') is part of district called 'SportCity' that plays host to the HQ of the English Institute of Sport, the National Squash Centre, a regional tennis centre and various athletics tracks. The National Cycling Centre is nearby at the Manchester Velodrome - the backdrop to 12 current cycling records.
For those who want to do it with a bit more style, the famous Midland Hotel on Peter Street, the place where Mr Rolls met Mr Royce, is only half a mile from Piccadilly station. More recent sporting guests in this Grade II* listed building have included David Beckham and Mike Tyson.
A more modern landmark city centre hotel is the Hilton Manchester Deansgate, just 25 minutes from Manchester Airport. From the 23rd floor bar (Cloud 23) you can see both COMS and Old Trafford. The view is best appreciated at night.
The Radisson Edwardian at the luxurious end of the price scale is a beautiful contemporary style hotel, with a impressive, monumentally listed, facade. It was voted Manchester Large Hotel of the year 2007. Here you could indulge in a 'treat yourself' spa treatment, if you wanted to opt for time out.
If money is really not a problem or you want to have a weekend you will never forget, try The Lowry (not to be confused with the arts centre of the same name). This is where most of the England team stayed when internationals were being played at Old Trafford when Wembley was being rebuilt and, naturally, is close to the ground. It is everything you would expect from a top-drawer international hotel. Plus a little more.
